Isla Pasión, Cozumel

500 Years of History

From ancient times, Isla Pasión was visited by couples from the ancient Mayan civilization. They sought to forge a connection with their deities, entreating them to bestow love and fertility upon their union.

Years later, during the Colonial era, it served as a hiding place for pirates, and more recently, it has been the set for various movies and series.

Currently, Isla Pasión in Cozumel is a site of spectacular beauty, dedicated as an exclusive destination for weddings. Couples can celebrate their beach wedding on a private island.

The Maya Island of Love

The legend tells the story of how the Maya princess Ixchel fell in love with Itzamá, a warrior from another kingdom. When he ascended to the Sun God, he took his beloved and bestowed upon her the virtue of the night, making her his wife and Goddess of the Moon. This union creates a balance where Ixchel represents femininity, night, and water, while Itzamá embodies masculinity, day, and earth.

The island, being the union of these elements, becomes a sacred place for the Maya, who associated it with the love and union of Ixchel and Itzamá.

That’s why they would arrive at the island exclusively to celebrate their marriage rituals, ceremonies that lasted at least three days. During these rituals, the couple underwent purification, families were united, and the marriage was consummated. It was these ceremonies that gave the island the name Mukyaj Peten, which, over time, became ‘Passion Island’ in Spanish. This name is still preserved to this day and is well known to the inhabitants of the Riviera Maya and Cancun area.
